Effects ofTransmission Error Rates on Saturation Performance of the IEEE 802.11 MAC

چکیده
Analyzing the effect of transmission errors on the performance of IEEE 802.11 is important since the wireless channels are error-prone. Most of the existing work on the performance analysis of IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) assumes ideal channel conditions. Although a few recent papers consider the impact of packet error rate, they assume the same packet error rate for all the nodes in the system. Obviously, this is an unreasonable assumption for practical environments. In this paper, a new analytical model is developed to evaluate the performance of DCF, in which nodes incur different transmission error rates. An improved Markov chain model is presented to analyze the impact of packet error rates on the transmission probability. A state transition matrix is set up to derive the stationary performance. Our analytical model is validated via simulations using ns-2.

Packet error model for the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol
Packet error in the IEEE 802.11 network is one source of performance degradation and its variability. Most of the previous works study how collision avoidance and hidden terminals affect the IEEE 802.11 performance metrics, such as probability of a collision and saturation throughput. In this paper we focus on the effect of packet errors on capacity and variability of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protoc...

متن کاملSaturation throughput analysis of error-prone 802.11 wireless networks
It is well known that the medium access control (MAC) layer is the main bottleneck for the IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. Much work has been done on performance analysis of the 802.11 MAC. However, most of them assume that the wireless channel is error-free. In this paper, we investigate the saturation throughput performance achieved at the MAC layer, in both congested and errorprone channels. We p...
متن کاملSaturation Analysis of IEEE 802.11e Burst Acknowledgment Mechanism over Infrared Wireless LANs
The IEEE 802.11 task group E is currently working on an extension of the MAC protocol which is called 802.11e. Some of the new insertions are the Enhanced Distribution Coordination Function (EDCF) and the Burst Acknowledgment (BurstAck) feature. In this paper an analysis and assessment between the efficiency of the well known stop-and-wait mechanism and the enhanced burst behavior is presented ...
متن کاملThe Impact of MAC Buffer Size on the Throughput Performance of IEEE 802.11
The medium access control protocol of IEEE 802.11 networks has been extensively studied to explore its throughput performance. A popular regime of study is the saturation regime where users are assumed to be saturated with information bits. The throughput achieved in this regime, called the saturation throughput, is commonly interpreted as the maximum achievable throughput for any given system....
